Granite Chief: CJ7 Build
4.6L EFI Stroker Motor
The venerable AMC inline 6 on steroids: stroked, bored, sipping on multi-port injection and cranking out ~350 ft lbs of torque.
Axle Swap
Remember when Dana 44’s were all the rage? They might not have the cult following that they used to, but for a short wheelbase rig they’re about perfect.
Twin Sticked Dana 300 with 4:1
The only remaining part of the original powertrain, the Dana 300 gets twin sticks and LoMax gears, bringing the crawl ratio to a respectable 73.14.
Humble Beginnings
Granite Chief started off as the cheapest, jankiest Jeep I could find. I was 16, had $1,300 saved up from a summer job, and desperately wanted a Jeep. I scoured Craigslist for months until, low and behold, a 1984 CJ7 showed up one day for—you guessed it—$1,300. It was a sign. I had to buy it.
It had a bent frame, crumpled fenders, holes in the body, and wouldn’t pass smog. It also had a roll cage, 3” lift, Detroit locker, 32” tires, 4.2L engine, 5 speed manual transmission, and Dana 300 transfer case. It didn’t have a top or doors, but who cares? I was 16, I would wear my rain jacket.
